Chantress: The Story
Sing and the darkness will find you.
This is what fifteen-year-old Lucy believes. The survivor of a shipwreck that she cannot remember, she lives on a lonely mid-Atlantic island where music is strictly forbidden. But after she starts to hear music that no one else can hear, she unlocks a terrible secret: She is a Chantress, a spell-singer, brought to the island not by shipwreck but by a desperate enchantment gone wrong.
Untrained and unsure of her gifts, Lucy accidently sings herself home to England and into mortal danger. For England lies in the cold grasp of the Protector, Lord Scargrave, who rules with magic that he robbed from the Chantresses, before he killed them off one by one. In the name of security, his spies, human and otherwise, grip England in a reign of terror.
Only Lucy, the last Chantress, has a chance of defeating him. First, however, she must master her unwieldy gift, no easy task when her only allies are an ancient alchemist, a touchy godmother, and a thief who turns her heart upside-down. To succeed, she must confront a dark family legacy and her own deepest fears and find her true voice before Scargrave finds her.
