Biography

About the Author: Speaking

Amy is an experienced speaker who enjoys talking to groups large and small about color, history, writing, and cochineal. Her lively slide presentations tell the story of the color red — from Cro-Magnon cave-art and Pompeiian frescoes to Renaissance masterpieces and costumes — and delve into the mysteries of cochineal, the most powerful natural red dye in the world. She brings cochineal and hand-dyed cochineal silks with her when she travels, so that audiences can see and touch the luxurious red dye for themselves.

She also gives talks on related subjects, including book publishing and the writing life.

Amy's lectures have taken her from coast to coast, from Harvard's Sackler Museum to the Los Angeles Public Library, as well as many wonderful independent bookstores, classrooms, and lecture halls. Her audiences often include painters, spinners, knitters, weavers, dyers, entomologists, textile collectors, as well as people who simply love a good story. She has also spoken about color and history on a number of public radio programs and on television.

If your museum, bookstore, library, or organization would like to learn more about booking Amy as a speaker, please her directly.

Update: Amy loves meeting readers, but health concerns have forced her to cut back drastically on travel. Though she appreciates every invitation she receives, she is able to accept very few of them. Many thanks for your understanding!
